Jointly taught with the Department of Philosophy this MA requires students to follow tee courses, two of which explore the relationship between the visual arts and one of which considers the art history of the late nineteenth and the twentieth centuries in a theoretically informed way. This combination of courses is designed to give students a thorough grounding in both German Idealist Aesthetics and its subsequent revision and critique by modernist and post-modernist artists and philosophers. AVA students have written dissertations which consider specific theories of aesthetic experience in relation to contemporary art, in particular, though more exclusively philosophical or art historical dissertations have also been successfully completed on this scheme. |
