Exeter, Reino Unido
Area y Programa de Estudios: Humanidades, Historia del Cine (English Studies (Cinema History)), M.A.
Descripción: This new flexible programme builds on the success of our established MA in the History of Cinema and Popular Culture. The programme provides a core of central methodological, critical and theoretical issues. You take two modules in Cinema History, two in Research Methodology and two optional. The course is concerned with the close analysis of two selected periods in cinema history from the sound period that are marked by certain processes of crisis, change and transformation. You will examine the significance of and relationship between different factors including economics, aesthetics, technology and critical discourse in these periods as well as considering the importance of particular films, film-makers, actors and critics. The relationship between developments in Hollywood cinema will also be related to those in certain Western European countries in order to demonstrate the international dimension and implications of such developments. While the particular historical moments under consideration may be subject to change, the most significant decades in the context of this module are the 1950s, the 1970s and the 1990s. The different ways in which similar issues and factors operated in different moments will also be highlighted, giving a comparative dimension to the two moments under consideration. You will set in place a narrative about the emergence and development of cinema in America and Europe up until the sound era which covers key textual and institutional transformations and ties these together with the broader cultural and social context in which films were made, exhibited, and understood. Though the principal narrative tead of the course will focus on American cinema, we will maintain a sustained focus on the connections between American and European cinemas and include material on different national traditions in filmmaking at various moments across the history mapped out. The course thus encompasses debates about the construction of national cinema cultures and the complicated and contested global dominance of Hollywood.
