Studying Biology at Leiden will raise a student's awareness that this subject is much broader and more diverse than is first thought. It provides ample opportunities for crossing borders with other science areas. Biology is part of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, which also covers mathematics, computer science, physics, astronomy, chemistry, biopharmaceutical sciences, life science and technology and sustainable molecular science and technology. In the last two fields, intensive cooperation takes place with Delft University of Technology. One of the central themes in the faculty is Biosciences, in which the above mentioned disciplines work together to understand life, its characteristics and its origin. |

This new programme is open to graduate students from any discipline and is designed to provide a firm interdisciplinary framework for academic analysis, which will permit the scientific investigation of current developments within the EU at a deeper level. Finally, by writing a thesis, the students will explore a topic of their own choice in depth. One unique feature of the programme is that every part of the course is supported by its own on-line resource environment. Another is that the more specialised courses in the second semester will be taught by staff with hands-on experience in the area covered. The programme as a whole will be accompanied by regular guest and research seminars given by leading national and international practitioners and academics in the field. The degree is based on a problem-orientated approach constructed around an interdisciplinary core, which draws on knowledge and insights from economics, history, law and political science (including international political economy). |

Comparative Indo-European Linguistics deals with the study and comparison of a large number of interrelated languages in Europe and Asia. The object of comparing Indo-European languages is to determine the relationship between these languages; changes in the phonological, morphological and syntactic structure of these languages are studied in their historical continuity. Eventually, scholars hope to succeed in reconstructing the language that must have been at the basis of the many separate languages of the Indo- European language family. Cultural-historical, religious and archaeological aspects are also considered in the reconstruction process. |
