It also demands thorough and state-of-the-art methodological understanding and skills. The research master's in Social Sciences offers training in a trans-disciplinary research approach in which boundaries between quantitative and qualitative methodology are actively bridged. It trains students to conduct research in an area where empirical-analytical and interpretive, quantitative and qualitative, actor-centered and structure-oriented perspectives flourish. |

The program in European Studies provides students with an in-depth knowledge of modern European history and integration, as well as European culture. Students following this program can choose to focus on Social Sciences or Humanities topics. Issues pertaining to East as well as West can be covered by this program and comprises of two tracks: European History and Integration (focusing on the history and theory of the various post-war forms of co-operation), and European History and Culture (a program aimed at mapping and understanding the multi-cultural and multi-national character of Europe). Typical courses include: Past Present and Future of European Integration; European Multi-Nationality; Central and Eastern Europe in the 20th Century; War and European Literature; The Idea of Europe in the 19th and 20th Centuries; Europe-Hollywood-Europe: American Cinema and European Imagination. |

The research master's programme in Metropolitan Studies will deal with this complex reality from different points of view: a spatial planning and institutional point of view; a social and geographical point of view; and an economic geographical point of view. The programme is meant for motivated, outstanding students who are interested in a career as an academic or applied researcher in the field of urban studies. |

Chemical engineering forms a special study within the Faculty of Chemistry, which has been accredited by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) in the UK. In consequence the diploma fulfils the examination requirements for graduate membership in the Institution of Chemical Engineers. After two or tee years approved training and experience, the graduate member may apply for corporate membership and to be registered as Chartered Engineer. |

The master focuses on social problems of urban regions in modern European welfare states, incidentally including urban regions outside Europe such as the US, and compares the way social problems are defined and tackled in various European countries, and puts these in a historical context. |
