Area, Programa, Titulo: Ciencias Naturales, Biogeología (Biogeology), M.Sc.
Descripción: This MSc programme in Biogeology is an interdisciplinary programme combining Biology and Earth Sciences. It is intended for students with a Bachelor's degree in one of these disciplines and an interest in ecology, evolution or paleoecology. The programme focuses on 'system earth' as a whole, studying the fundamental processes that drive natural systems, in particular those processes that have a strong impact on the biosphere and biodiversity. Emphasis is placed on the interaction between communities of living organisms and the changing lithosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere. Biogeologists use knowledge of processes that have affected the earth in the past (for instance the effects of climate change on the biosphere) to analyse future teats that might endanger our global system.

Area, Programa, Titulo: Ciencias Naturales, Biología Animal (Animal Biology), M.Sc.
Descripción: Students following the Master's programme in Animal Biology will study the metabolic, endocrine, developmental, neural and cognitive mechanisms that determine the development and functioning of animals, including their social behaviour. These will be studied both at the level of the individual animal-from molecule to organism-and at the level of animals in their natural environment.

Area, Programa, Titulo: Ciencias Naturales, Biología y Bioinformática (Theoretical Biology and Bioinformatics), M.Sc.
Descripción: This programme is aimed at students who are interested in fundamental research in Theoretical Biology and Bioinformatics. Students will gain extensive knowledge of bioinformatic theory formation, both in terms of the concepts and in terms of the methodology and methods of bioinformatic modelling and pattern analysis. Bioinformatics is taught here in the broad sense of information processing in biotic systems. This includes both 'static' bioinformatics and 'dynamic' modelling approaches to bioinformatic processes. Methods used include non-linear systems, pattern analysis and various simulation formalisms.

Area, Programa, Titulo: Ciencias Naturales, Biología y Enfermedades (Biology of Disease), M.Sc.
Descripción: In this multidisciplinary Master's programme, students will study diseases and disease mechanisms. The core component of the programme consists of independently planning and conducting two research projects. Supervised by a senior staff member and a PhD student or a postdoc, students will explore a disease-related research question tough research assignments, in which they will learn to use the 'language of the clinic' and work together in a team with clinical and preclinical research staff. Upon completing the programme, they will be well able to correctly apply various advanced research techniques.

Area, Programa, Titulo: Ciencias Sociales, Derechos Humanos Internacionales (International and European Protection of Human Rights),
Descripción: The role of human rights is becoming increasingly important in several law-related fields. A major theme of current academic and political discourse concerns the extent to which human rights are universal or regional. Since the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, many treaties and implementation mechanisms have been put in place, at both global and regional level. At global level, the UN Commission on Human Rights established several rapporteurs and working groups and appointed a UN High Commissioner on Human Rights, charged with coordinating the UN supervisory system. At regional level, several organisations have been set up, each with its own supervisory and implementation systems. One of these is the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.

Area, Programa, Titulo: Derecho, Derecho Internacional y Europeo (International and/or European Law),
Descripción: The sovereignty of the State seems to be eroding. This diminishing legal exclusivity of the State seemed particularly clear when international organisations, individuals and 'groups of individuals' such as transnational corporations or NGOs, appeared on the international legal scene. The foundation and growth of the European Communities, and the establishment in 1993 of the European Union, were most noteworthy as an expression of this process of erosion of the traditional powers of the State. However, the State was stronger and perhaps better equipped for cooperation and globalisation than many had predicted. Although its exclusivity had certainly lost most of its legal splendour, it appears to have retained its dominant position on the international stage. Consequently, legal scholars today often find themselves engaged in a balancing act, assessing the powers of the State in view of the increasing rights and duties under the international law of international organisations, individuals and other subjects.

Area, Programa, Titulo: Ciencias Sociales, Estudios Históricos y Comparativos en Ciencias y Humanidades (Historical and Comparative Studies of the Sciences and Humanities), M.A.
Descripción: The research Master's programme in Historical and Comparative Studies of the Sciences and Humanities offers students thorough training in the history of reflection on Western culture, science and society from 1500 A.D. to the present. It combines a universalistic perspective and an interdisciplinary approach in order to integrate the knowledge and methods of the various disciplines in the history of science. Historical and Comparative Studies of the Sciences and Humanities is an interdisciplinary programme in which the Faculties of Science, Medicine, Social Sciences and Arts co-operate.
